Q3/2017, 330.7 million domain names were registered on the Internet

Verisign today announced the third quarter of 2017 for the entire domain name on the Internet. Thereby, 330.7 million domain names have been successfully registered.

330.7 million is not a small number but compared with Q2 it decreased slightly, 0.4%, equivalent to 1.2 million domain. Compared with Q3/2016, the total number of domain names across the system still recorded growth of 1.1%, about 3.7 million domains. Inside:

  • National domain names (ccTLD) accounted for 43.7% – 144.7 million domain names, up 0.3% over Q2/2017 and 3.2% over the same period last year. .CN, .TK, .DE are still the top three names in the list of the most registered ccTLDs, respectively 21.4 million, 19.1 million and 16.3 million domain names.
  • .COM and .NET accounted for a slightly higher 44.1%, or 145.8 million, up from 1.2% in 2016.

Of the total of 145.8 million .COM, .NET domain names, there are 8.9 million new domain names were registered in Q3/2017. Quarter 3/2016, this number only reached 8.3 million domain names.

As of September 30, 2017, Verisign also reported that “coin” is the most registered keyword in .COM and .NET domains. It is true that now the home, people are busy, talk about Bitcoin virtual currency. Many countries and major trading floors in the world have been planning appropriate policies and regulations so that the currency can be operated smoothly.

With the new extensions, .XYZ has successfully flipped back to the lead, followed by .LOAN. .TOP sits at number three.

Q3/2017 has not changed the top five favorite domain registrations than Q2, the order remains the same, .COM, .CN, .TK, .DE and .NET respectively.
