Transfer hosting in just 1 minute, do you believe?

Sometimes I have a headline, but this tip is real. You can change hosting in less than a minute, and especially the website will work without interruption at all.

This way I’ve used it for a long time, essentially using the Windows hosts file to point the domain to my preferred IP before DNS domain pointing.

Previous hosting transfer process

    1. Backup / compress the current website (database and data)
    2. Upload website to new hosting
    3. Point DNS to new hosting
    4. Unpack the website, install, import data, handle errors

In this process there is a period of time the website stopped working to wait DNS, install, fix errors (if any)… However with the process below will improve a lot.

The process of transfering hosts using the hosts file

  1. Backup/compress the current website (database and data)
  2. Upload website to new hosting
  3. Point new IP in the hosts file
  4. Unpack the website, install, import data, handle errors
  5. Point DNS to new hosting

The difference here is the new IP pointer in the hosts file. At this point the browser will use the new IP, not the IP you are using. Now you have to install the new website hosting.

With some large DNS providers such as Cloudflare, GoDaddy, the DNS change time I see the time is only 30 seconds is received right, so not wrong when I say transfer hosting in just a minute.

How to edit the hosts file?

You have understood the idea here is to use the Windows hosts file, but how to do it, then choose one of the following:

1. Edit the hosts file directly using notepad

As a guide: Beginner Geek: How To Edit Your Hosts File

2. Use the HostsMan visualization tool for Windows

– Click on Editor

– Click Add and enter the Hostname as shown below: Domain and IP

– Finally click Add and Save is finished. You can check again by ping will see the domain has now moved to the new IP.

3. Use the Terminal on macOS

On macOS, use the following command in the terminal to edit the contents of the hosts file:

Then insert the IP and domain configuration at the end of the file, press Ctrl + O to save and Ctrl + X to exit.

Hopefully with this tip, you can easily move, test hosting without interrupting the website operation.

Good luck!
